THE EXHIBITION
FROM PRIVATE TO PUBLIC ‒ THE TARKETT COMPANY ART COLLECTION
from 13th of May to 15th of October, 2016

The exhibition From Private to Public ‒The Tarkett Company Art Collection is the result of a decade long cooperation between the Gallery of Matica Srpska and the Tarkett Company. After the art works from the Company collection had been listed, described and submitted to conservation and restoration, thanks to the professional expertise of the Gallery and the good will of the Tarkett Company, the necessary conditions were created to present this exceptional collection to the public. The cooperation between the Gallery of Matica Srpska and the Tarkett Company is an example of a successful and meaningful public-private partnership in conservation and presentation of the national cultural heritage, revealing to the public eye numerous important works of art.

The collection which the Tarkett Company bought from Blažo Kusovac, a collector of art works, consists of 85 objects, comprising icons by Russian and Serbian icon painters, as well as those from Boka Kotorska, together with many important 20th century art works ‒ paintings, sculptures and drawings. Consequently, this exhibition, besides presenting a separate collection of icons from the 17th and 18th century, also provides a coherent representation of the development of modern art on the territory of former Yugoslavia. Although at first glance the art works from the Tarkett Company Art Collection may seem incompatible, due to their different techniques and thematic and chronological frameworks, they nevertheless illustrate the most dominant artistic ideas and esthetics in the South-Slavic region in the period between the 17th and the 20th century.

The exhibition comprises many works of art that so far have not been exhibited, by Petar Lubarda, Risto Stijović, Milo Milunović, Nadežda Petrović, Zora Petrović,  Jovan Bijelić, Petar Omčikus, Mihajlo Vukotić and Lazar Vujaklija, together with a selection of icons.

During the exhibition, various accompanying programme has been prepared, intended both for the younger and the older audience: lectures, guided interpretations, educational and creative workshops for children.
