Inspired by Italy
On the occasion of the 140th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Italy and Serbia and the 10th anniversary of signing of a strategic partnership between these two countries, the Gallery of Matica Srpska, in cooperation with the Italian Institute of Culture in Belgrade and sponsored by DDOR Insurance, organized the exhibition Inspired by Italy, author Stanislava Jovanović Mindić, curator of the Gallery. The exhibition is dedicated to Serbian-Italian cultural and artistic relations, i.e. to Serbian artists who found role models and incentives for their work in the artistic tradition of Italy.
By the selected artworks from the collection of the Gallery of Matica Srpska, the Italian “experiences” of Serbian painters in the artistic tradition and practice of the 19th century are visually represented. Through the works of Aksentije Marodić, Jeftimije Popović, Jovan Popović, Pavle Simić and other Serbian artists presented at the exhibition, visitors could indirectly get acquainted with Italian art, but also learn how it influenced and inspired the education of Serbian artists, regardless of whether they were educated in Italy, were on a study visit to Italy, or gained knowledge observing artworks by Italian artists which they had a chance to see in the cities of Europe.
The exhibition is accompanied by a bilingual Serbian / Italian catalog Inspirati par Italia, available at the GMS Shop.
